There is a vocations crisis in the Catholic Church today. The number of priests in the US has been steadily dropping over the past thirty years, while the number of Catholics is skyrocketing. If something isn't done, we're going to revert to the era of the 'priest circuit rider,' who drives from town to town to hear confessions and say Mass once a month. There needs to be a sense of urgency to encouraging more vocations.

Pope John Paul II said "The duty of fostering vocations falls on the whole Christian community."

That is where the Savannah Vocations Ministry comes in. Chartered eleven years ago as the Serra Club of Savannah, today there are members from many of Savannah's churches, operating independently from Serra, but we are still dedicated to affirming, encouraging and supporting vocations to the priesthood and religious life as well as working to create a prayerful environment conducive to stimulating more vocations.

The heart of our work is to promote prayer for priests and seminarians. As a result of our efforts, most of the parishes in Savannah now pray for vocations at every Mass. We also hold a monthly Holy Hour for Vocations to ask the Lord of the Harvest to send more laborers into the harvest.

But prayer is just the beginning. We also do the hard work of cooking and serving the meals at Vocations Retreats and seminarian events. In addition, we have numerous affirmation activities to encourage priests, seminarians and nuns in the diocese and thank them for their dedicated service to the Lord. In addition we have undertaken various service projects at the request of the Bishop.

We believe the existence of a Vocation Ministry, acting as a vocation resource, can help parish communities establish a culture of vocations in their midst and that should certainly help promote more vocations in the Diocese of Savannah.
