At the May 25, 2013 meeting of the Serra Club of Savannah, Fr. Mark Van Alstine reported that Bishop Hartmayer had approved our request to withdraw from Serra International and reorganize our club as the St. John Vianney Vocations Ministry of Savannah effective June 1, 2013.

Those members present unanimously adopted the new charter patterned after the St. John Vianney Vocations Ministry of Augusta formed earlier this year.

We elected the first slate of new officers for the Vocations Ministry of Savannah as follows:
• President: Roger Haneline
• Vice President: Joe Hasbrouck
• Secretary: Gretchen Reese
• Treasurer: Alex Guira

The new Savannah Vocations Ministry, although operating independently from Serra, is still dedicated to affirming, encouraging and supporting vocations to the priesthood and religious life as well as working to create a prayerful environment conducive to stimulating more vocations.

One of the immediate results of withdrawing from Serra was that we could no longer use the Serra name or familiar logo. Our Mission has been, and will continue to be, to promote vocations in Savannah, so we focused on the Vocations Ministry of Savannah element of our name as the embodiment of our activity.

As we tried to come up with an image that could serve as our logo, we started with the shield of the Diocese of Savannah which is a recognizable symbol of our area. It contains a cross of red, also called the Cross of St. George, symbolizing the state of Georgia which was named for King George II. The four blue stars signify that Georgia was the fourth state to ratify the Constitution of the United States. The last element, a gold rose, represents the Cherokee rose, Georgia's state flower.

After several iterations, using the diocesan shield as the background, we replaced the Cherokee rose, with an image of a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, who helps everyone discern the will of the Lord and calls forth vocations. The Holy Spirit is always present in our lives to enlighten the way to Jesus and help us discern the will of the Lord, leading everyone to God our Father and to everlasting life.

As we undertake this new ministry, we ask the Lord of the Harvest to bless our seminarians and all men who are discerning a call to the priesthood. And also ask that he send the Holy Spirit upon these men chosen for the priestly ministry, to stir into flame the call to the priesthood in their hearts, that they may they answer the summons and follow the Lord with generous hearts.

And then the words “Savannah Vocations” were added in the ring around the new coat of arms, which captures the essence of our work.
